To make you think over this holiday (and to horrify you a little), I present to you two mythical creatures I came across recently:
The Vegetable Lamb of Tartary was is a fictional creature that fictionally grew in Central Asia. The story goes that this is a lamb that grows from a fruit, half animal and half plant. Starting from a seed, the lamb grew and was connected to the earth by a stem like an umbilical cord. The sheep part of this creature would then graze on all the plants growing around it, but would die when the plants were gone or the animal was separated from the stem. The meat of the animal was supposed to taste sweet, like honey.
Then there is the barnacle goose. The barnacle goose is a legitimate animal, but people got really confused as to why they were never seen during the summer. And because something like migration would have been a totally outlandish theory, people decided that the sudden disappearance of the geese was attributed to the fact that they were developing underwater after they fell from the barnacle goose tree.
To make things even stranger, Irish clerics briefly declared these creatures to not be fowl because they were grown from trees, which allowed religious people to eat goose during fasts.
So this Thanksgiving, remember to eat your veggies.

lovenoculars
In high school, a couple I knew invented "lovenoculars" so that they could send each other love from a distance away. It involved forming a heart with your hands, placing them around your eyes, and then staring directly at the person you want to send love to. It became a big thing in our group and we would all send photos to each other of it.
When Nick and I started traveling together, he bought me a polaroid camera and I started a little art project where I take a lovenocular photo of him everywhere we go.
So in honor of our seventh anniversary this week, here is a sampling of some of our adventures together:
Here's to many more adventures.

drinking like an author: virgnia woolf edition
When I first moved to San Francisco, I bought this book filled with literary cocktails.
Then I completely forgot about it until the guy who lives above me ran water to take a bath and then fell asleep. I woke up to find my apartment making a slow transformation into a pond.
I was quickly moved to another apartment for a few days while the damage was fixed. While packing up a few things to make sure nothing I valued got water damaged, I came across this book again. And what better time to drink than when you were woken up at 3 in the morning because your apartment is doing an impression of Atlantis and you can't go back to sleep?
A Rum of One's Own--
Quotes: "Oh, Virginia. So smart. So sad. So...specific. According to our gray Woolf, a woman needs "money and a room of her own to write fiction."."
Ingredients:
Butter
Light brown sugar
Cinnamon
Dark rum
Hot water
Steps:
I probably shouldn't get specific. Buy the book.
But, put it all together.
It makes my insides toasty.
I chose this drink because it was simple and warm and I am just now tasting the irony as I made it the day that I no longer have a room of my own. Damn that Virginia Woolf!

october occurrences
This month, things happened.
I did some dog boarding, which Addie was a fan of.
Nick and I went to a floor party where the hostess made sushi and ramen for 50 people and I spent most of the night hanging out with one tenant's pre-teen daughter. We talked about Disney Princesses, mermaid butt holes, and how she wants to be a singer/dancer/journalist/astronaut/president. Then we went around and gave all the adult sobriety tests. It was the best party ever. And this was our view:
I made these meringues because October:
We watched the Blue Angels from our roof:
Greg and Elaine took us to Google:
Addie covered in Google mud:
We went apple picking:
I made so many apple things. Caramel apple shots:
Pumpkin apple smoothie:
Blooming apples:
Caramel dipped apples:
Cinnamon apple chips:
Apple butter:
Apple Snickers pie:
And we still have apples leftover, so this will be continued.
We stopped by a pumpkin patch:
And turned it into a Jack-o-lantern:
We tag-teamed it this year. I made Professor Quirrell on the front:
And Nick did a projection of Voldemort on the back:
We baked pumpkin seeds:
And my love of Sky Mall was reignited:
Family gathered together to celebrate the life of my Grandpa:
Best friend is now 25! Nothing starts a birthday party like double possession:
GIANTS WIN EVERYTHING FOREVER:
Two days later and the celebration is still going strong:
Our tomatoes are ripening!
And they go well with pizza:
I found these white footsteps that lead from the electrical equipment room next to my apartment:
And a white handprint on my door. Nick and I can't figure out how they got there:
My view every morning:
Halloween:
And I might have put eyebrows on the dog:
